How to Freeze a River

Heraclitus, Laozi, Zhuangzi, and David Bohm each said, in his own grammar, that reality flows and that names hold still. Every one of the sayings froze. This page walks the four freezes — with receipts.
Four layers of this ground each hold one attempt: The River That Stays excavates the river fragment of Heraclitus from under the slogan it became; The Way That Can Be Told lays nine translators over the Tao Te Ching's opening refusal to be told; Between Zhou and the Butterfly watches English tense tip Zhuangzi's dream off its balance point; and Relevant Is Something You Do rebuilds David Bohm's 1980 attempt to engineer the stillness out of English grammar. Each page checks its own claims. What none of them says — because no single page can — is that they are the same event, four times. A mind notices that the world runs like water and that sentences set like plaster. It says so. The saying is made of sentences. The plaster wins, every recorded time, and it wins a different way each time: by quotation, by power, by translation, and — the strangest case — by shelving.
The recipe, as practiced for twenty-five centuries

DEMONSTRATION I — QUOTATION FREEZES
The best-documented freeze in the record. One sentence about rivers, five states of matter. Step through them; the readouts recompute below. This is the compressed core of The River That Stays, which walks the full stratigraphy layer by layer.

Read the whole chain and one more thing comes loose: the freeze did not merely shorten the sentence, from nine Greek words down to two. On the reading G. S. Kirk argued in 1954 — the member page lays out the argument, and names its live opponents — the genuine fragment, with the same (αὐτοῖσιν) planted before anything else moves, is a sentence about staying: a river keeps its name precisely because its water leaves. What reached the coffee mugs is a sentence about pure flux. Somewhere in the thousand years between Eusebius's chain of custody and the handbook formula, the sentence about persistence-through-change froze into its own opposite. The word counts and the dates on the readouts above are arithmetic; that last turn is an argument, and it is argued — with sources, and with the dissent shown — one layer down.
DEMONSTRATION II — POWER FREEZES
The Tao Te Ching opens with a warning label: the Way that can be told is not the constant Way. Naming, it says in six characters, freezes the flowing real. Then the freeze came for the warning label itself — not through a philosopher, but through a government.
道可道,非常道
The oldest surviving witnesses of the line — the silk manuscripts from the tomb at Mawangdui — write constant as 恆 héng. Every received text since writes it 常 cháng. The reason is not philosophy. In 180 BCE a man named 劉恆 — Liu Heng — became Emperor Wen of Han, and his personal name became unwritable: a naming taboo swept 恆 out of the classics. The line that says the constant Way cannot be named had its own word for “constant” replaced because it became a man's name. The recipe works even on the warning label. (Established, with the manuscript apparatus, on The Way That Can Be Told; the standard print source is Henricks 1989. The Guodian slips, c. 300 BCE, do not contain this chapter — the silk manuscripts are the line's oldest witness. The text itself is a compilation of the 4th century BCE by current dating.)
DEMONSTRATION III — TRANSLATION FREEZES
Zhuangzi found a form that refuses the freeze. The butterfly dream ends on a perfectly balanced question — and Classical Chinese marks no tense and no number, so the balance holds: nothing in the grammar says which dreamer is real, or when. English cannot leave when unsaid. To cross the border, the sentence must pick a tense; picking a tense picks a winner.
周之夢為胡蝶與 / 胡蝶之夢為周與
“Now I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man.”
“I did not know whether it had formerly been Kâu dreaming that he was a butterfly, or it was now a butterfly dreaming that it was Kâu.”
The passage's last word is 物化 — thing + transform, “the Transformation of Things” (Legge's rendering, and Watson's). Giles printed “Metempsychosis” instead, importing a transmigrating soul into a sentence that may exist to dissolve exactly that. DEMONSTRATION IV — EVEN ANTIFREEZE SETS
Twenty-four centuries after the diagnosis, a quantum physicist tried engineering instead of warning. David Bohm's Wholeness and the Implicate Order (1980) asks, of English:
“Is it not possible for the syntax and grammatical form of language to be changed so as to give a basic role to the verb rather than to the noun?”

His prototype is the rheomode — “the flowing mode.” He built it from seven Latin roots and a small affix machine, and named it from the Greek: “‘rheo’ is from a Greek verb, meaning ‘to flow’” (p. 39). Its forms run like this:
— and the dictionary turns out to be on his side: relevant really does descend from Latin relevare, re- + levare, “to lift up again.” The whole grammar, all 44 forms Bohm published, regenerates live on Relevant Is Something You Do.
Now the two closures, both on the record. First: the rheomode was never adopted — not by physics, not by philosophy, not by Bohm's own later chapters, which are written in ordinary noun-bearing English. He knew; the chapter's closing sentence declines to predict:
“Whether it would be useful to go further […] and to try to introduce the rheomode into active usage, it is not possible to say at present, though perhaps some such development may eventually be found to be helpful.”

The language built so that it could not hold still survives only as a specimen: 44 fixed forms, printed once, quoted since. The antifreeze set in the bottle.
Second — and this is the turn the four pages could not see alone. One chapter after the rheomode, on p. 61, Bohm reaches for a precedent:
“The notion that reality is to be understood as process is an ancient one, going back at least to Heraclitus, who said that everything flows.”

Who said that everything flows. He didn't — Demonstration I is the receipts. The man who spent chapter two building a language against the freeze received Heraclitus, in chapter three, through the freeze: the two-word late-antique slogan, worn smooth, name attached. Bohm's 1980 sentence is not a commentary on the stratigraphy; it is its newest layer — you stepped through it above, at PERMAFROST. And there is a smaller rivet, ours to point at: the Greek verb Bohm reached for — ῥέω, the rheo- in rheomode — is the verb already flowing inside the genuine fragment's last word, ἐπιρρεῖ, “flows on.” Bohm printed no Greek and drew no line to Heraclitus's actual words; the line is ours, and the letters are checkable below. When he went looking for a name for the mode of flow, he picked up the one word of the real sentence the slogan had kept.
THE PATTERN, STATED HONESTLY
Two traditions with no known contact — the first documented Greco-Chinese exchange is Han-era, two centuries after both texts; the scholars who compare them (A. C. Graham's Disputers of the Tao, the logos-and-dao literature) compare types, not lineages — arrived at the same diagnosis: reality runs; names set. And in all four documented cases, the diagnosis itself could travel only by setting:
- Quotation compresses. Nine words about rivers → two words about everything, ~1,000 years, direction of drift toward the portable and the noun-like.
- Power renames. One emperor's given name, one character swapped, every copy since.
- Translation forces choices. A tenseless mirror must pick a tense at the border; every English rendering is one of its frozen states.
- Engineered antifreeze sets. The rheomode survives as 44 fixed forms and a name — a noun.
That is the whole claim: four cases, documented, walked. Not a law of language — four is not a sample, and we have not searched the world's archives for the counterexample. If you know a statement of flux that crossed two thousand years of transmission without freezing — without shortening, hardening, or swapping its verb for a noun — the door is open, and we will build it a room.
Not that grammar imprisons thought: Whorf's showcase — Hopi as a language with no time-words — was refuted by Malotki's Hopi Time (1983); what survives of linguistic relativity is a nudge, not a cage (the rheomode page walks the field's honest state). Not that Bohm built on Daoism or on Heraclitus's real words: the Tao appears nowhere in his book, and the rheomode chapter never mentions Heraclitus — the echoes are ours to point at, and are pointed at as ours. Not that the persistence-reading of B12 is settled: it is Kirk's argument, and Barnes and Graham read genuine flux; the member page shows the dissent. The freeze this page demonstrates is in the transmission of statements — word counts, dates, manuscript variants, printed renderings, all checkable — not in anyone's cognition.

Step four. Notice that the recipe has one more line, and that you are reading it. This page is also ice. It set on 2026-07-03, and — barring a correction, which the apparatus would show — it will say these words in this order forever, which is exactly the property the four minds above were warning about. The liquid version was the making of it, and the making is gone. If you want the water, go where it still moves: the four rooms above recompute their claims every time you load them. A page that must freeze can at least freeze clear — every layer visible, every crack dated, the way good ice holds a leaf.
